New Delhi: In a strategic shift, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has partnered with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to introduce Starlink satellite internet services in India.
The agreement marks a surprising turnaround after months of competition over spectrum allocation. As part of the deal, India’s largest telecom operator will stock Starlink equipment in its retail outlets, providing the satellite internet provider with an extensive distribution network.
The move follows a contentious battle between Musk and Ambani over how airwaves should be assigned for satellite internet, with New Delhi ultimately adopting Musk’s preferred approach.
Reliance had initially been wary of Starlink’s entry, fearing it could disrupt India’s telecom landscape. However, this partnership enables Ambani to distribute Musk’s services while also competing in the same market.

The Reliance-Starlink deal follows a similar partnership announcement with India’s second-largest telecom provider, Bharti Airtel, a day earlier. Both agreements are contingent on Starlink securing government approvals to commence operations.
The collaboration comes weeks after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Musk in Washington to discuss space, mobility, and technological innovation.
Starlink has awaited commercial licenses in India since 2022, but regulatory approvals have been delayed due to national security concerns. Reports suggest the Jio-SpaceX agreement includes specific financial terms allowing Reliance to offer Starlink services in regions where Jio has limited coverage. Jio will also provide installation and activation support for Starlink devices.
