Pakistan: Efforts to end the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran suffered a major setback after high-stakes negotiations in Islamabad ended without a breakthrough, casting uncertainty over a fragile ceasefire.

The marathon discussions, which stretched for nearly 21 hours, were seen as a critical opportunity to halt more than six weeks of intense fighting that has claimed thousands of lives and disrupted global markets.

Instead, both sides walked away blaming each other for the deadlock, raising fears that hostilities could resume.

Talks End Without Breakthrough

Leading the American delegation, Vice President JD Vance struck a blunt tone after the talks concluded, stating that no agreement had been reached and suggesting that Iran stood to lose more from the impasse.

Vance reiterated that Washington’s core demands remained unchanged, particularly on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

According to Vance, the United States had made its ‘red lines’ clear, emphasizing the need for Iran to commit firmly to abandoning any pursuit of nuclear weapons or the capability to rapidly develop them.

Iran Points to Trust Deficit

On the Iranian side, Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf placed the blame squarely on Washington, arguing that the US had failed to build trust despite what he described as constructive proposals from Tehran.

Qalibaf indicated that while Iran had put forward forward-looking ideas during the talks, the lack of confidence remained a major obstacle.

Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf suggested that the responsibility now lies with the United States to demonstrate its willingness to move beyond longstanding tensions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who co-led the delegation, was also involved in the negotiations, underscoring the importance Tehran attached to the discussions.

Key Issues Remain Unresolved

Despite some reported areas of partial agreement, significant differences persisted on critical issues, particularly Iran’s nuclear program and the strategic Strait of Hormuz—a vital global oil transit route.

The Islamabad meeting marked a rare moment of direct engagement between the two adversaries—their first such encounter in over a decade and the highest-level contact since the Iranian Revolution.
