San Francisco: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has launched Grokpedia, a new online encyclopedia positioned as a direct rival to Wikipedia. The initial release, Grokpedia Version 0.1, is now live as a website, allowing users to search for and read articles powered by xAI’s own technology.
Unlike Wikipedia, Grokpedia’s content is created and maintained exclusively by xAI’s system, Grok, without any option for users to edit, contribute, or add references.
Musk announced the launch through a post on X, describing Grokpedia 0.1 as better than Wikipedia, and promising that Version 1.0 would be ten times better. According to the website, Grokpedia was developed by software engineer Jason A. Bloomer and is designed to make information as accessible as possible. The platform’s content is open source and continuously updated, though its editing and article generation remain automated.

Version 1.0 will be 10X better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia imo.

The platform can be accessed via grokpedia.com and currently requires users to log in with their X accounts. It is available only as a web service, with no mobile applications for Android or iOS released yet.
How the Platform Works
Grokpedia’s system functions through five main steps: Search or Request, Cache Check, Dynamic Creation, Static Storage, and Snowball Effect.
When a user searches for a topic, the system first checks if an existing page exists in its cache. If not, the request is sent to Grok to generate a concise factual summary, which is then stored as a static page and indexed for future use. Over time, as more users interact with the site, its content expands- a process the platform refers to as the ‘snowball effect.’
Musk has also said that users will eventually be able to ask Grok to add, modify, or delete articles, with the system either accepting the request or explaining its refusal.
The goal of Grok and https://t.co/op5s4ZikGJ is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal. https://t.co/j8bJf7c4Hl

Grokpedia has already drawn criticism for allegedly using material from Wikipedia. Lauren Dickinson, a spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation, said that Wikipedia’s strength lies in its transparent policies and rigorous volunteer oversight.
Dickinson also noted that many artificial intelligence models rely heavily on Wikipedia’s human-generated content for training and reference, suggesting that platforms like Grokpedia still depend on the very sources they seek to replace.
