Luanda: India and Angola have signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to deepen cooperation in areas such as fisheries, aquaculture, and marine resources. The agreements marked a strong start to President Droupadi Murmu’s four-day state visit to the southern African nation- the first-ever by an Indian President.
President Murmu received a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace in Luanda, where Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço greeted her with a 21-gun salute and a guard of honour. The two leaders then held detailed talks aimed at expanding the strategic partnership between the two countries, followed by the exchange of MoUs and a joint statement before the media.
During the discussions, President Murmu highlighted the close and growing partnership between India and Angola, describing it as one built on mutual trust, respect, and a shared vision for progress. She commended Angola’s developmental strides and expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to her delegation. Murmu also thanked the Angolan leadership for inviting her to take part in the country’s 50th Independence Day celebrations on November 11.

Energy cooperation featured prominently in the talks, with Murmu noting Angola’s vital role in supporting India’s energy security. The two leaders agreed to diversify trade and investment ties across sectors, including technology, agriculture, health, defence, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges.
India also welcomed Angola’s decision to join the International Big Cat Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance. Both sides reaffirmed their intent to enhance collaboration within the broader framework of the India–Africa Forum Summit.
Following the formal discussions, President Lourenço hosted a banquet in honour of the visiting Indian leader. On Monday, President Murmu is scheduled to address the Angolan National Assembly, an engagement expected to further reinforce bilateral goodwill.
