United Nations: Amid increasing tensions between India and Pakistan, the United Nations Security Council stands ready to discuss the situation if formally requested, said Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, the President of the Security Council for May and Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
Sekeris noted that the Council was closely monitoring the evolving bilateral tensions, particularly in light of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The attack, which drew international condemnation, killed several individuals, including nationals from India and Nepal. “This is an issue that is ongoing and evolving. We are listening, of course, and monitoring closely. The Council will be seized of the matter if needed. This is certain,” Sekeris said.
The Council had earlier issued a press statement condemning the “heinous terrorist attack” and urged that the perpetrators be brought to justice.

Expressing solidarity with the victims, Sekeris extended condolences to the governments of India and Nepal as well as to the families affected. Sekeris emphasized that the Council is deeply concerned about the growing strain between India and Pakistan.
“We are seriously concerned with the growing bilateral tension,” he said, adding that several major UN member states are already engaged in dialogue with both nations to encourage de-escalation. The Security Council, the principal body responsible for international peace and security, is prepared to act if the situation worsens.
Sekeris noted that Pakistan, currently a non-permanent member of the Security Council, could play a role in initiating discussions. However, he expressed hope that diplomatic efforts would help ease the tensions. “It involves two very big member states and a lot is at stake. Let’s hope these efforts for de-escalation will be helpful. But we are prepared,” he said.
