New Delhi: Taking a decisive step towards smarter train operations, Indian Railways is linking its automatic data logger system with the Control Office Application (COA) of the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). The upgrade promises faster, more accurate train movement tracking, reduced manual errors, and enhanced real-time information for passengers.
According to railway officials, the implementation is already underway across multiple zones and divisions, with promising outcomes in operational speed, safety, and passenger communication.
Pankaj Singh, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), at North Eastern Railways, said that, “The process of linking data loggers with COA of CRIS is progressing steadily in several sections. This system will significantly help both the Railways and passengers by enabling real-time tracking and eliminating manual errors.”

“Earlier, control panels were massive and cumbersome. Now, we have replaced them with two LED screens-one active and one on standby, making the system faster and more efficient,” Singh noted.
Echoing the benefits, Diptimoy Dutta, CPRO of Eastern Railway, described the data logger system as the “black box” of the Railways. “It records all essential data that can later be used for analysis, especially after any untoward incident. This helps authorities determine the exact sequence of events at specific times,” Dutta remarked.
A data logger is a computer-based system that records information from connected relays, primarily used to monitor and log activity in railway signaling systems.
It captures movement data automatically and transmits it to the COA, enhancing accuracy in train movement tracking and reducing dependency on manual data entry.

The integration is also expected to improve the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), which passengers rely on for real-time updates about train schedules and positions. With more accurate and timely data, passengers can plan their journeys better and avoid uncertainty or misinformation.
This strategic technological upgrade is a landmark step in the Indian Railways’ ongoing digitization journey. By automating data capture, enhancing accuracy, and ensuring real-time visibility of train operations, the system marks a future-ready approach to railway management and passenger satisfaction.
