New Delhi: Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post effective immediately, citing health concerns. The resignation letter, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, was submitted on Monday, coinciding with the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
In his letter, Dhankhar stated that, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
The 73-year-old leader expressed his deep gratitude to the President for her unwavering support and the wonderful working relationship maintained during his tenure.

Dhankhar’s resignation follows a series of health challenges faced over recent months. He fainted during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Kumaon University on June 25, raising concerns about his well-being. Earlier, in March, the Vice President was admitted to Delhi’s AIIMS hospital due to chest discomfort and was closely monitored in the Critical Care Unit.
In his heartfelt note, Dhankhar extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers for their cooperation and support. “Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office,” he wrote.

He also acknowledged the warmth and trust shown by Members of Parliament, remarking that, “The affection I have received from all Hon’ble Members of Parliament will be forever cherished and embedded in my memory.”
Highlighting his pride in India’s growth, Dhankhar remarked on the country’s remarkable economic progress and exponential development during his tenure. “Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honor,” he said.
He expressed confidence in India’s future, stating that, “As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.”
Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution empowers the Vice President to resign by submitting a written letter to the President. Dhankhar’s resignation adheres to this constitutional mandate.
