Los Angeles: Organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics unveiled the full competition schedule, promising a Games that will break new ground for women’s sports and deliver unforgettable moments for fans around the world.
The Olympics will open on July 14 and run through July 30, featuring 11,200 athletes competing across 51 sports at 49 venues. For the first time in Olympic history, every team sport will feature as many or more women’s teams than men’s, with women making up 50.5 percent of all athletes.
Day one of competition, July 15, will set the tone with the most women’s finals ever held on a single day, beginning with the women’s triathlon and a showcase spotlight on the women’s 100 meters. Athletes will take on the unique challenge of running three heats in one day, signaling a bold start to the Games.
Shana Ferguson, LA28 chief of sport, said the aim is to kick off the Olympics “with a bang,” highlighting the fastest women in the world. Chief athlete officer Janet Evans added that athletes responded positively when consulted about the schedule, eager to rise to the challenge and train for the historic first-day spotlight.

Organizers also flipped traditional scheduling, moving track and field to the first week and swimming to the second. This ensures fans can enjoy athletics in the early week and attend the opening ceremony without conflicts, while swimming will take place in a packed SoFi Stadium during the second week, enhancing the spectator experience.
‘Super Saturday,’ on July 29, promises a jam-packed day of competition with 26 finals sessions across 23 sports, including athletics, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cricket, golf, football, swimming, and tennis.
Medal action will span both team and individual sports, culminating in a truly unforgettable day. The final Olympic champions will be crowned in swimming just before the closing ceremony, wrapping up a spectacular Games.
Marathons will be staged on the final weekend, with the women’s marathon on July 29 and the men’s on July 30. Around 14 million tickets will be available, with pricing details to be announced later.

Several sports return or debut in Los Angeles. Baseball and softball are back, with baseball held at Dodger Stadium and medal games on July 19. Cricket returns after more than a century, with women’s and men’s finals on July 20 and July 29, respectively. Lacrosse, an Olympic sport in 1908 and later a demonstration event, will feature both men’s and women’s finals on July 29. New Olympic sports include American flag football and squash, making their debut on July 15. Details on football tournaments and the Paralympics will be announced later.
The LA28 schedule was meticulously designed in collaboration with Olympic and sport federation officials, taking into account athlete welfare, fan experience, and weather conditions. Evening sessions will provide cooler conditions for outdoor events, including equestrian competitions at Santa Anita.
