Sydney: Lakshya Sen produced a sharp and confident performance to lift the Australian Open Super 500 title, bringing an end to a challenging spell on the international circuit.

The 24-year-old Indian star defeated Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 21-15, 21-11 in a fluent display that lasted just 38 minutes. The win marks Sen’s first title of the season and signals a strong comeback after a difficult period following his fourth-place finish at the Paris Olympics. Throughout the week in Sydney, he showed renewed control and consistency, and in the final, he dictated rallies with precise shot-making and quick movement.

This is Sen’s first major title since the Canada Open in 2024. He also won the Syed Modi International Super 300 that year, but had missed out on top-tier honors despite reaching the Hong Kong Super 500 final earlier in the season.

Tanaka, ranked world No. 26 and winner of two Super 300 titles this year, entered the match in good form, but Sen allowed him little room to settle. From the opening exchanges, the Indian controlled the tempo, forcing errors and maintaining pressure to close out the match in straight games.

With this victory, Sen becomes only the second Indian shuttler to win a BWF World Tour title this year, joining Ayush Shetty, who claimed the US Open Super 300. India has had several close finishes this season, with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty reaching the finals at the Hong Kong and China Masters, and Kidambi Srikanth finishing runner-up at the Malaysia Masters.
