Miami: Lionel Messi will remain with Inter Miami until the end of the 2028 Major League Soccer (MLS) season after signing a contract extension, the club confirmed.

Messi signed the new deal at Miami’s Freedom Park stadium, currently under construction, with Inter Miami posting a video on social media captioned: “He’s Home.”

“Playing in this stadium and continuing this project makes me really happy. Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here,” Messi said in a club statement.

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham praised Messi’s decision, stating that, “commitment to the city, to the club, to the game.” Beckham added that, “He’s still as committed as he’s ever been, and he still wants to win. As owners, we feel very lucky to have a player who loves the game and inspires the next generation of young talent.”

Messi’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season. The extension ensures he will remain active well beyond the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and has had a transformative effect on the league, driving record attendances and ticket revenues. He won the MLS Most Valuable Player award in 2024 and became the fastest player in league history to reach 40 goals in 2025.

This season, Messi led Miami back into the playoffs, finishing third in the Eastern Conference. He concluded the regular season with a hat-trick in a 5-2 win over Nashville SC, scoring 29 goals in 28 matches to secure the MLS Golden Boot award.

Messi spent the majority of his career at Barcelona, winning 10 La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies. He also led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022 and has scored 114 international goals, winning the Copa America twice, in 2021 and 2024.
