US: Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced that it is acquiring artificial intelligence startup Manus, marking a rare collaboration between US and Chinese tech companies.

The acquisition will allow Meta to integrate Manus’s self-directing AI agent into its consumer and business products. Manus, founded in China in 2022 but relocated to Singapore earlier this year, describes its technology as a ‘virtual colleague’ capable of planning, executing, and delivering complete work products with minimal human input.

Meta said the deal brings one of the world’s leading autonomous general-purpose agents to billions of users globally. The Manus team will join Meta to expand its AI capabilities across Meta AI and other platforms, enhancing tools for both consumers and businesses.

Manus founder and CEO Xiao Hong praised the deal as a validation of the startup’s ambitious approach. He said the company had faced skepticism over the feasibility of autonomous AI but persisted, aiming to build technology that acts, creates, and delivers at scale.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Manus has already generated significant attention in tech circles, with its AI agent capable of tasks ranging from creating travel itineraries to analyzing stock data.

Earlier this month, the company reported that its annual recurring revenue had surpassed $100 million, claiming the fastest growth to this milestone in startup history.

The acquisition signals Meta’s commitment to developing autonomous AI and reflects the growing competition between US and Chinese technology firms in the artificial intelligence sector. By integrating Manus’s technology, Meta aims to advance tools that can operate independently, offering practical solutions to users while enhancing its position in the global AI landscape.
