Washington: Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced the launch of a new political party in the United States, aiming to shake up what he called the country’s entrenched ‘one-party system.’
The move comes amid a high-profile falling-out between Musk and US President Donald Trump, with whom he had once been closely allied.
Musk, the world’s richest person and once a major political donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign, revealed the formation of the so-called America Party, declaring his intention to challenge the political establishment and push back against what he views as reckless government spending.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote on X, the social media platform he owns. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The announcement marks a dramatic shift in Musk’s political involvement. Once a leading figure in Trump’s inner circle, Musk had spearheaded the administration’s cost-cutting drive as head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an office created to slash federal spending and reduce bureaucracy.
By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!

However, the relationship soured over Trump’s expansive domestic spending agenda, which Musk repeatedly criticized for adding trillions to the national debt. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO publicly vowed to oppose lawmakers who backed what he labeled as fiscally irresponsible policies.
“We cannot continue on this path of unsustainable spending that mortgages our children’s future,” Musk warned in earlier posts. Musk’s America Party aims to offer voters an alternative to the existing political order, though details on its platform, leadership structure, and electoral strategy remain sparse.
The tech mogul’s immense personal wealth and influence, combined with his control over one of the largest social media platforms, could give the new party a significant visibility advantage, though it remains to be seen whether it can translate into electoral success.
