Doha: India’s javelin sensation and two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra made history at the 2025 Doha Diamond League by breaching the coveted 90-metre mark for the first time in his career.
The 27-year-old recorded a massive throw of 90.12 meters on his third attempt, becoming the 25th athlete in javelin history to cross the milestone. Chopra began with a strong 88.44m throw. His second and fifth attempts were fouls, while the fourth and sixth measured 80.56m and 88.20m respectively.
Despite Chopra’s historic performance, Germany’s Julian Weber clinched the top spot with a best throw of 91.06m. Grenada’s Anderson Peters took third with 85.64m. “Crossing 90 meters has been a long-time goal. I’m happy to finally achieve it, but the journey continues,” Chopra said after the event.
Earlier this week, Chopra was conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. The ceremony, held in New Delhi was presided over by the President of India, who officially bestowed the title in recognition of Chopra’s exceptional service to Indian sports and his contributions on the global stage.

The honorary rank places Chopra alongside sporting greats such as MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev, who have previously received similar recognition from the armed forces.
“It is a matter of immense pride to receive this honor. I feel humbled and inspired to continue serving the nation in every way possible,” Chopra said at the ceremony.
The double milestone, a personal best on the field, and a prestigious national honor marks a landmark week in the life of one of India’s most celebrated athletes.
