Dubai: As part of the UAE’s compassionate gesture during the holy month of Ramadan, over 500 Indian citizens are set to return home after being granted pardon. These individuals are among the more than 2,700 prisoners released under the UAE’s Ramadan clemency programme. Their legal formalities have been completed, and they are expected to repatriate by the end of April.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the release of 1,295 prisoners, while Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum granted clemency to 1,518 inmates, ahead of Ramadan.
The large-scale pardoning reflects the UAE’s ongoing humanitarian efforts and its emphasis on forgiveness and rehabilitation. Official data confirms that over 500 of the pardoned prisoners are Indian nationals, many of whom had been serving sentences in Dubai’s correctional and punitive establishments.
While the presidential and prime ministerial orders were issued in late February, most beneficiaries completed the required legal procedures only recently. Their return to their respective home countries, including India, is scheduled by the end of April.
UAE Government to Settle Financial Liabilities
In a notable move, the UAE government has also pledged to settle the financial liabilities of the pardoned individuals. This initiative is aimed at easing the burden on former inmates and their families, enabling them to reintegrate into society and rebuild their lives free from financial distress.
However, among the 2,813 released individuals from various nationalities, many lack the means to return home. Community organisations, including KMCC (Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre), have stepped forward to provide support for their repatriation.
