New Delhi: Indian batter Rohit Sharma has achieved a new milestone by climbing to the top of the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings for the first time in his career.
Rohit, aged 38 years and 182 days, has become the oldest batter ever to hold the No. 1 position, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record. Tendulkar last occupied the top spot in 2011 at the age of 38 years and 73 days.
This is the first time Rohit has reached the top of the ICC rankings in his 17-year international career. He replaced India’s current ODI captain, Shubman Gill, who had held the position since late 2023.

Rohit’s rise followed his brilliant form in the recent three-match ODI series against Australia, where he scored 202 runs in three innings, including a match-winning century that guided India to a dominant nine-wicket victory.
His performances earned him 36 additional rating points, taking his total to 781, ahead of Gill and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran, who holds second place. Gill has now slipped to third in the latest rankings.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli dropped one place to sixth after scoring two ducks and an unbeaten 74 in the final ODI, while Shreyas Iyer climbed to ninth with consistent performances throughout the series.

Rohit also etched his name in the record books during the series. He surpassed Virender Sehwag’s tally of 15,758 runs across formats as an Indian opener, achieving the mark in 11 fewer innings.
Additionally, he equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 45 international centuries as an opener, underlining his longevity and consistency at the top of the order.
