Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a snap election for April 28, arguing that a fresh mandate is essential to counter the growing challenges posed by US President Donald Trump.
The decision comes against a backdrop of tensions between the two nations, driven by Trump’s trade policies and controversial remarks about Canada’s sovereignty.
Carney’s remarks underscore the growing strain between the two allied nations. Trump has imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and threatened additional duties on key exports, including dairy and lumber. He has also openly questioned Canada’s sovereignty, a claim Carney strongly rejected.

“Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada. President Trump claims that Canada isn’t a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen,” Carney stated after securing approval for the election from the Governor General, King Charles’ representative in Canada.
Carney’s decision to hold an early election comes as his Liberal Party experiences a resurgence in the polls following former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation in January.
With just five weeks until election day, Carney faces a critical test in winning public confidence and proving he can stand firm against Trump’s aggressive stance toward Canada.
