New Delhi: The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has received a list of more than 900 Indian nationals set to be released from prisons across the United Arab Emirates following a humanitarian directive issued by the UAE leadership in late November 2025.
The decision was announced ahead of the UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations, which coincide with the country’s National Day on December 2 and mark the formation of the federation in 1971. As part of the initiative, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the release of selected inmates from correctional facilities nationwide.
In a further step aimed at easing reintegration, the UAE leadership has also committed to settling financial liabilities linked to the inmates’ sentences, including fines and compensation. This measure is expected to spare families from heavy financial burdens and help those released start anew.
Officials described the move as a reflection of the UAE’s long-standing humanitarian approach, particularly during national and religious occasions. The release is intended to offer inmates a second chance while bringing relief to their families, many of whom have faced prolonged hardship.

The gesture adds to a series of similar initiatives extended to Indian nationals in the past. The UAE is home to more than 3.5 million Indians, making it one of the largest Indian diaspora communities in the world.
Close ties between the two countries, supported by growing trade, investment and people-to-people links, have often been marked by such acts of humanitarian cooperation.
Indian authorities are now coordinating with UAE officials to complete the release process and facilitate the return or reintegration of those freed.
