Lima: Peru’s Congress has sworn in 38-year-old Jose Jeri as the country’s new President after the sudden impeachment of Dina Boluarte, making him one of the youngest leaders in the world.
Jeri, a conservative lawmaker from the Somos Peru party, took office on Friday and will lead a transitional government until July 2026. His appointment follows years of political turmoil- he is the seventh president to take office in just nine years.
In his first speech to Congress, Jeri promised to make public safety his top priority, declaring that, “The main enemy is out there on the streets: criminal gangs.” He pledged to declare war on crime as violence and insecurity rise across the country.
Born in Lima to a middle-class family, Jeri studied law at Federico Villarreal National University and later earned a degree from a private university. He joined Somos Peru in 2013, made several failed bids for public office, and eventually entered Congress as a substitute legislator. In July 2025, he became president of Congress, placing him next in line for the presidency.
Beyond law and order, the young president faces a complex web of economic and political challenges including soaring inflation, deep mistrust in government institutions, and persistent street protests.
Jeri’s rise, however, has not been without controversy. Earlier this year, he was accused of sexual assault, but the charges were later dismissed for lack of evidence. Local media have also reported alleged links to corruption, which he denies, stating that he is willing to cooperate with any investigation.
Protests that began under Boluarte’s rule could test Jeri’s leadership early on. Demonstrations were planned for October 15 against government corruption and unpopular reforms, though it is unclear if they will proceed.
