Mexico: A powerful explosion at a supermarket in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora has left at least 23 people dead, including children, and injured at least 11 others. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Waldo’s store in Hermosillo, sending shockwaves through the community during the Day of the Dead weekend.

Local authorities were quick to dismiss early speculation of a deliberate attack, stating the blast was not linked to criminal violence. Officials have begun a full investigation to determine what triggered the explosion and who, if anyone, may be responsible.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed that several of the victims were minors. He said emergency services worked swiftly to contain the fire and rescue survivors.

He noted that medical teams are treating the injured at nearby hospitals, and vowed that authorities would be transparent in uncovering the cause of the blast. He offered support to grieving families and assured the public that no one would face this tragedy alone.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum extended her condolences to the affected families through a message posted on social media. She said she had spoken with Governor Durazo and directed federal officials to send support teams to assist victims and their relatives.

Local media images showed a blackened storefront, shattered windows, and smoke damage stretching across the building. Nearby businesses closed quickly to prevent the fire from spreading.

The explosion struck at a time when families across Mexico were honouring loved ones who had passed away, turning a weekend of remembrance into one of heartbreak for many in Hermosillo. Authorities are continuing to assess damage and provide care as the community mourns.
