New Delhi: Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei captured his career-best win at the India Open Super 750 on Sunday, taking the men’s singles crown as An Se Young of South Korea secured the women’s title.
Lin, ranked 12 in the world, defeated Indonesia’s third seed Jonatan Christie 21-10, 21-18 in the men’s singles final. The win came just a week after an early exit at the Malaysia Open and marked a breakthrough for the 26-year-old.
Arriving in New Delhi with a muscle strain that had made walking difficult earlier in the week, Lin decided to play on and made the most of the opportunity. In the final, his fast, attacking game kept Jonatan under constant pressure. The Indonesian struggled to adjust to the conditions, allowing Lin to take control early. While Jonatan fought back in the second game, Lin stayed calm and finished strongly, winning the last six points in a row to seal the match and the title.
In the women’s singles final, An Se Young was firmly in charge as she beat China’s Wang Zhiyi 21-13, 21-11. The top seed moved smoothly around the court, using her accuracy and patience to keep Wang on the defensive throughout the match.
The victory gave An her second title of the season and continued her dominance over Wang. Her coach later said she has been working on a more attacking style, along with fitness and mental preparation, to stay ahead at the top level.
In the doubles’ events, China’s top-seeded women’s pair Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning claimed the title with a straight-games win over Japan’s Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Matsumoto. The mixed doubles trophy went to Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, who edged Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje in a close three-game final.
The USD 950,000 India Open ended with strong performances from both rising players and established stars, giving fans an exciting week of top-level badminton in New Delhi.
