New Delhi: India has officially submitted an expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant step toward its ultimate ambition of staging the 2036 Olympics.

Having previously hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India is eager for another opportunity. While the 2010 event faced criticism due to corruption allegations and logistical issues in the lead-up, the Games was ultimately deemed a success.

With the 2030 edition marking the centenary of the Commonwealth Games, India is positioning itself as a strong contender, especially given the recent challenges in securing host nations for the event.

In recent years, the Commonwealth Games have struggled to find committed hosts. The 2026 edition will be a scaled-down version in Glasgow after Australia’s Victoria withdrew due to financial constraints. Similarly, the 2022 Games had to be relocated to Birmingham when South Africa’s Durban backed out due to budgetary concerns.

With a growing economy and proven experience in hosting large-scale sporting events, India is optimistic about its bid. The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is March 31, after which formal bids will be considered.

India’s ambitions extend beyond the Commonwealth Games. The country is also bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad in Gujarat emerging as the focal point of its plans.

With significant investment in sporting infrastructure and government support, India sees the Commonwealth Games as a crucial stepping stone toward its Olympic aspirations.
