Experts observe that, compared to the large waves in 2020 and 2021, the current surge is less intense, but with the notable change that COVID -19 is no longer seasonal and can infect people throughout the year.

Singapore: Years after the global pandemic brought life to a standstill, COVID-19 is making a noticeable comeback in parts of Asia, particularly in major financial hubs Hong Kong and Singapore.

Recent data highlights a surge in infections, raising questions about the virus’s current threat level. Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch at Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection, said that COVID-19 activity in the city is quite high.

The positivity rate among respiratory samples has climbed to the highest point recorded this year. The city also saw a spike in deaths, with 31 Covid-related fatalities reported in the week ending May 3- the highest weekly death toll in about a year.

Despite this rise, it’s important to note that the total cases and fatalities remain significantly lower than the severe waves experienced during the pandemic’s peak years. Hong Kong’s population of around seven million people continues to face a challenging but manageable situation.

In Singapore, the number of Covid cases rose sharply to an estimated 14,200 in the week through May 3- a 28 percent increase from the prior week. Hospitalizations increased by approximately 30 percent, marking the city-state’s first official update on infections in nearly a year.

Despite the rise, the Ministry of Health stressed that there is “no indication that the circulating variants are more transmissible or cause more severe cases than during the pandemic.” This suggests that while cases are up, the overall severity remains under control.

Although COVID-19 cases are rising in Hong Kong, Singapore, and some neighboring regions, the pace and severity of the current wave are not comparable to the drastic surges seen in 2020 and 2021.

Public health experts highlight a new pattern in the virus’s behavior: unlike typical respiratory illnesses that peak in colder months, Covid-19 is now spreading even during warmer seasons.

This deviation underscores the virus’s adaptability and potential to cause illness year-round, which may require adjustments in public health strategies. However, with vaccination coverage high and health systems better prepared, the current surge is being managed cautiously rather than triggering widespread alarm.

With high vaccination rates and improved healthcare readiness, authorities remain cautiously optimistic. The resurgence is being closely monitored, but it is not yet a cause for widespread alarm.

COVID-19 continues to circulate and evolve, especially in densely populated urban centers. The latest rise in cases in Hong Kong and Singapore serves as a reminder to stay vigilant and maintain public health measures, but it does not signal a return to the crisis levels seen earlier in the pandemic.
