Madrid: Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has won the European Golden Shoe for the first time in his career, capping a standout debut season in Spain with a match-winning double against Real Sociedad on Saturday.

The France international struck both goals in a 2-0 win at the Bernabéu in Real Madrid’s final league game, finishing the La Liga campaign with 31 goals enough to secure the league’s Pichichi Trophy as top scorer and elevate him to the top of Europe’s goal charts.

Mbappé edged out Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the final standings, under UEFA’s weighted scoring system that gives greater value to goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues.

Despite Gyökeres scoring eight more league goals, the Swedish striker finished second as goals in Portugal’s Primeira Liga carry a coefficient of 1.5 points, compared to two points per goal in La Liga.

Mbappé’s 31 goals earned him 62 points, while Gyökeres finished on 58.5. Salah, who needed a hat-trick in Liverpool’s final game to match Mbappé, scored once in a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, ending with 29 goals and 58 points.

Mbappé becomes just the third Real Madrid player to win the European Golden Shoe, following in the footsteps of Hugo Sánchez (1989–90) and Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the award three times during his spell in Madrid.

While Gyökeres couldn’t overtake Mbappé due to the season’s earlier finish in Portugal, he ended a remarkable campaign with 53 goals in 51 matches across all competitions.

Top Five Golden Shoe Rankings:

  1. Kylian Mbappé – 31 goals (La Liga) – 62 points
  2. Viktor Gyökeres – 39 goals (Primeira Liga) – 58.5 points
  3. Mohamed Salah – 29 goals (Premier League) – 58 points
  4. Robert Lewandowski – 27 goals (La Liga) – 54 points
  5. Harry Kane – 26 goals (Bundesliga) – 52 points

The Golden Shoe caps off a dominant individual season for Mbappé, who will now turn his focus to international duty as France prepares for a busy summer.
