New Delhi: Indore has once again reaffirmed its status as India’s cleanest city, securing the top position in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 rankings for an eighth consecutive year, a record-breaking achievement.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards during a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan. The Madhya Pradesh city continued its winning streak in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ (MoHUA) flagship urban cleanliness survey, widely recognized for driving India’s sanitation revolution.
Following closely behind Indore were Surat in Gujarat, which secured the second position, and Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, which ranked third.
The 2024-25 edition marked the ninth iteration of the Swachh Survekshan, one of the world’s largest urban sanitation assessments. Over 4,500 urban local bodies (ULBs) were evaluated by more than 3,000 trained assessors over a rigorous 45-day period. The comprehensive assessment included citizen feedback, service-level progress, and independent verification.

Launched in 2016, Swachh Survekshan has become a significant tool in promoting cleanliness through citizen engagement and third-party validation, under the broader Swachh Bharat Mission.
MoHUA has introduced a new category this year, the ‘Super Swachh League’. This elite league includes 12 cities that have secured top-three rankings in at least two of the past three years (2021-2023).
The cities in this league will be assessed on higher aspirational indicators. To retain their position, they must maintain a performance score of 85 percent or more. Furthermore, going forward, the top three cities in each population category will gain entry into this league, reinforcing sustained excellence in urban sanitation.
Indore’s consistent performance has set a national benchmark for urban cleanliness, inspiring cities across India to enhance waste management, sanitation, and citizen engagement.
The city’s success is attributed to its robust infrastructure, community participation, and innovative practices like door-to-door waste collection and waste segregation at source.
