Panaji: Goa has been chosen as the host city for the prestigious FIDE World Cup 2025, one of the most significant events on the international chess calendar.
The tournament will take place from October 30 to November 27, bringing together 206 of the world’s leading players to compete for a prize fund of USD 2 million and three coveted spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.
Describing the event as a “knockout spectacle,” the International Chess Federation (FIDE) said every round of the World Cup carries the intensity of a win-or-go-home contest, making it one of the most dramatic and widely followed tournaments in chess.
Among those expected to compete are India’s brightest stars, reigning World Champion D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Nihal Sarin, and Arjun Erigaisi, alongside Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, one of the greatest players in history. FIDE noted that Goa’s vibrant culture, scenic beaches, and hospitality will provide a striking backdrop for the global showdown.
India’s emergence as a powerhouse in world chess has been underscored by a string of recent successes. Gukesh became World Champion in 2024, while Indian teams clinched gold in both the Open and Women’s sections of the Chess Olympiad. Earlier this year, Divya Deshmukh captured the Women’s World Cup title, further cementing India’s position at the top of the game.
India is delighted to be hosting the prestigious FIDE World Cup 2025 and that too after over two decades. Chess is gaining popularity among our youth. I am sure this tournament will witness thrilling matches and showcase the brilliance of top players from around the world. https://t.co/iyfS7f3gGz

“Staging the World Cup in Goa builds on these achievements and offers Indian fans a rare opportunity to watch their heroes compete against the best in the world on home soil,” FIDE said in its statement.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich hailed India’s role in global chess. “India has become one of the strongest chess nations, with outstanding players and passionate fans. After the success of the FIDE Women’s World Cup earlier this year, we are proud to bring the World Cup to Goa. It will be a celebration of chess and a unique experience for players and spectators,” he said, adding that players from over 90 countries are expected to participate.
All India Chess Federation (AICF) President Nitin Narang pledged that the national body would ensure a world-class organization. “The World Cup will not only inspire millions across the country but also showcase India’s growing stature as a global hub for chess. We are deeply thankful to FIDE for granting us this honour,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also welcomed the announcement, writing on X that the tournament “will witness thrilling matches and showcase the brilliance of top players from around the world.”
