Buenos Aires: Argentinian President Javier Milei’s libertarian movement scored a sweeping victory in the legislative elections. The results mark a decisive political shift in South America’s second-largest economy and serve as a major endorsement of Milei’s controversial economic overhaul, which has combined deep austerity cuts with deregulation.

Milei’s La Libertad Avanza (Freedom Advances) party secured more than 40 percent of the vote, well ahead of the Peronist opposition, which managed about 31 percent. The midterm vote was widely seen as a referendum on Milei’s presidency and his promise to dismantle decades of state-heavy economic policies.

“This is a turning point for Argentina. The Argentinian people have left decadence behind and chosen progress. Together, we will make Argentina great again,” Milei declared at his party headquarters in Buenos Aires.

Supporters erupted in celebration as the president declared the win as the end of the Peronist era, which he blamed for years of financial instability and repeated sovereign defaults.

Half of the lower Chamber of Deputies’ 257 seats and one-third of the Senate’s 72 seats were contested. Milei’s party tripled its representation in both chambers, winning 101 seats in the lower house, up from 37, and 20 seats in the Senate, up from six.

The gains ensure that Milei will have sufficient support in Congress to block impeachment efforts, defend presidential vetoes, and advance his ambitious package of tax, labour, and spending reforms. The most striking result came from Buenos Aires province, where La Libertad Avanza ran neck and neck with the opposition, signaling a profound shift in Argentina’s political landscape.

Milei’s win also secures continued support from US President Donald Trump, whose administration recently arranged a $40 billion bailout package for Argentina. The deal includes a $20 billion currency swap and a proposed $20 billion debt investment facility. Trump had tied future US backing to Milei’s political performance, warning before the vote that, “If he doesn’t win, we’re not going to waste our time.”

Milei’s reforms, including the slashing of subsidies, cutting public spending, and freeing up the exchange rate, have helped bring inflation down sharply, from an annual rate of 289 percent in April 2024 to 32 percent last month.

However, the austerity measures have come at a steep cost. Living expenses have increased as subsidies for electricity and transport were scrapped, wages have lagged behind prices, and unemployment has risen.

A corruption scandal involving Milei’s sister and adviser, Karina Milei, had recently dented the president’s image, but the election victory signals continued public trust in his economic course.
