Ahmedabad: India has officially been awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad chosen as the host city for the event’s landmark centenary edition.

The confirmation came during the Commonwealth Sport general assembly in Glasgow, where all 74 member nations endorsed India’s bid. The approval was largely procedural, following last month’s recommendation from the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board, which backed Ahmedabad as the preferred host after a thorough evaluation process. India last staged the Games in 2010, when New Delhi delivered one of the country’s most successful multi-sport events.

Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, said the decision marks a strong beginning for the Games’ next century. He praised India’s scale, youthful energy, cultural depth, and sporting passion, noting that the centenary edition will be staged in a country that reflects the evolving identity of the Commonwealth. He added that the wider interest for future editions shows the Games remain in good health.

India’s bid was formally submitted in August after receiving approval from the Indian Olympic Association. Although Delhi already has established sports infrastructure, the IOA pushed for Ahmedabad, highlighting its modern facilities, growing global profile and capacity to host large events. The choice represents a strategic shift aimed at showcasing India’s capabilities through emerging cities rather than relying solely on the capital.

Ahmedabad’s selection also strengthens India’s longstanding ambition to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. The city has rapidly expanded and upgraded its sports infrastructure over the past decade, positioning itself as a strong contender for the global event. Hosting the Commonwealth Games is expected to further boost its Olympic aspirations.

India previously staged the 1982 Asian Games, an event that played a key role in elevating the country’s global sporting presence under the leadership of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

India faced competition from Abuja, Nigeria, during the initial bidding phase, but Commonwealth Sport has now chosen to consider the African nation for the 2034 edition. The first Commonwealth Games, then known as the British Empire Games, were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930, making the 2030 event a historic milestone.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya welcomed the decision, calling it a moment of pride for the nation. He said India has repeatedly proven its ability to stage major international events and expressed confidence that the country would be among the world’s top-five sporting nations by 2047.
