New Delhi: India has launched the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Greece, expanding the international reach of its digital payments platform and enabling Indian travelers to make seamless transactions using UPI-enabled applications.
The launch was announced by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who is on an official visit to Athens. With Greece joining the network, UPI is now accepted in ten countries, reflecting India’s continued efforts to expand its digital payment infrastructure globally.
The service was introduced through a partnership between Eurobank and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL). During his visit, Goyal witnessed a live demonstration of the UPI payment system at Eurobank’s headquarters in Athens.
The demonstration was attended by Eurobank Chief Executive Officer Fokion Karavias and Fairfax Digital Services Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Tugnait.
In a post on social media, the minister said the partnership marks another step in the international expansion of India’s digital payment ecosystem.
With UPI now operational in Greece, eligible customers can transfer money instantly through UPI-enabled applications. The platform offers secure and seamless transactions while significantly reducing transaction costs compared with conventional international payment methods.

Goyal said the growing adoption of UPI in international markets reflects increasing confidence in India’s technology-driven digital payment infrastructure.
The platform helps to strengthen partnerships with other countries by providing efficient payment solutions that support trade, tourism, and people-to-people connectivity.
The launch in Greece follows a series of international expansions for UPI. Earlier this month, the payment system was introduced at Galeries Lafayette, a well-known department store in Nice, France, allowing Indian visitors to make purchases using UPI. In 2024, UPI was also launched at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, extending its availability to one of France’s most visited tourist destinations.
With the addition of Greece, UPI is now accepted in Greece, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia. The expansion enables Indian travelers to use familiar digital payment platforms while traveling abroad without relying on cash for eligible transactions.
