Thiruvananthapuram: Indian batting star Virat Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the fastest 15,000 runs in One-Day International (ODI) cricket, becoming only the second batter to reach the milestone.
Kohli reached 15,000 ODI runs in his 303rd innings, surpassing Tendulkar’s previous record of 377 innings. He achieved the landmark during India’s opening ODI against the West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
The 37-year-old reached the mark with a boundary off West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph, pulling the delivery towards midwicket before raising his arms to acknowledge the crowd’s response.
Kohli is now the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history. He moved past former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who finished his career with 14,243 ODI runs, in October 2025.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is fourth on the all-time list with 13,704 runs from 375 ODIs, while former Sri Lanka opener Sanath Jayasuriya follows with 13,430 runs in 448 matches.

Kohli also scored his 55th ODI century during India’s chase of 296, completing the hundred from 74 balls. It was his 86th international century.
Earlier, India captain Shubman Gill scored his 10th ODI century, making 110 from 107 balls. Gill and Kohli added 150 runs for the second wicket as India reached 300 for two in 41.4 overs.
India had made a steady start to the chase, with Gill and Rohit Sharma putting together 75 runs for the opening wicket before Rohit’s dismissal brought Kohli to the crease.
Gill went on to build a century after being dropped on 11, while Kohli controlled the chase with a combination of running between the wickets and boundary hitting. Gill was eventually dismissed for 110, caught in the deep while attempting a slog sweep against Roston Chase.
West Indies had earlier posted 295, with Justin Greaves scoring his maiden ODI century, an unbeaten 101. India spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler for the hosts, taking four wickets.
Kohli finished unbeaten on 139, hitting 10 fours and nine sixes, while India completed an eight-wicket victory to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Kohli’s 50th ODI century came against New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup semifinal in Mumbai. His 55 ODI hundreds remain the most by any batter in the format.
