New Delhi/ Bucharest: India and Romania have agreed to double bilateral trade over the next three years and expand cooperation in sectors including pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and defense during President Droupadi Murmu’s official visit to Romania.
The visit marks the first by an Indian President to Romania in nearly three decades. President Murmu and her Romanian counterpart, Nicusor Dan, held delegation-level talks in Bucharest and reviewed the full range of bilateral relations.
The two sides also signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering cooperation in science and technology, sports, and the establishment of a Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Bucharest.

Addressing the media after the talks, President Murmu said that economic cooperation remains a key pillar of India-Romania relations.
“We have agreed to promote trade and investment, strengthen supply chains, and encourage closer cooperation between the industries of both countries. We have also set a target to double bilateral trade in the next three years,” she said.
The two countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, renewable energy, green hydrogen, agriculture, fertilizers, science and technology, digital public infrastructure, and artificial intelligence (AI).
On defense, President Murmu added that both countries would enhance cooperation through regular exchanges, training, capacity building, and collaboration between their defense industries.

India also announced that it will double training opportunities for Romania under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program. The expanded program will include courses on AI, while Romanian diplomats will also receive training in AI and cyber diplomacy through India’s Foreign Service Institute.
President Murmu welcomed Romania’s cooperation under the International Solar Alliance and its intention to join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
The two countries also agreed to designate 2028, which marks 80 years of diplomatic relations between India and Romania, as the India-Romania Year of Innovation.
The leaders exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to peace, dialogue, and international law.
President Murmu thanked the Romanian government for its hospitality and said she looked forward to welcoming President Dan to India.
President Dan described the visit as an important step in advancing bilateral ties. He said both sides discussed measures to increase trade and investment, as well as the possibility of establishing direct flights between India and Romania.
“I believe this visit marks a new phase in our bilateral relations, and I am confident that we will continue to strengthen cooperation between our two countries,” he said.
