Washington: Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has officially declared August 15 as India Day, recognising the contributions of the Indian-American community to the state’s growth and encouraging residents to join the celebrations marking India’s Independence Day.
In a proclamation issued on August 1, Healey highlighted the lasting impact of the Indian diaspora on Massachusetts and praised community organisations for promoting cultural understanding, civic participation and stronger ties through Independence Day events and year-round community initiatives.
The proclamation marks the 79th anniversary of India’s Independence on August 15, 2026, describing the country’s freedom in 1947 as a defining moment that led to the establishment of the world’s largest democracy.
Healey also acknowledged the global reach of the Indian diaspora, noting that more than 36 million people of Indian origin live across the world. In the United States alone, over five million Indian-Americans contribute to the country’s economy, innovation and public life.
The proclamation described India as a nation known for its remarkable diversity, with a rich blend of cultures, languages, religions and traditions united by a shared national identity.

It further recognised the role of Indian-Americans in Massachusetts, saying the community has made valuable contributions across healthcare, science, technology, education, business and public service, strengthening both the state’s economy and its multicultural character.
The governor also praised the community for continuing to celebrate India’s Independence Day through cultural programmes and public events that reflect the country’s democratic values, heritage and commitment to peace and progress.
In a separate proclamation, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also declared August 15 as India Day. Michelle Wu welcomed the opening of the new Indian Consulate in Boston and acknowledged the visit of INS Sudarshini during the SAILBOSTON-250 celebrations, describing both as milestones that further deepen ties between India and the city.
