New Delhi: Air India has introduced a new Basic fare category on select domestic routes, offering passengers a lower-priced travel option without complimentary meals as the airline looks to provide more flexible choices for budget-conscious travelers.

The new fare, currently being tested on a pilot basis, is available in Economy Class and is aimed at passengers who prefer paying only for essential travel services.

While complimentary meals are not included, travelers booking the Basic fare will continue to receive a complimentary tea or coffee service during the flight.

Passengers opting for the Basic fare will also be entitled to a 15 kg checked baggage allowance and a 7 kg cabin baggage allowance, ensuring that key travel necessities remain part of the package.

Air India clarified that the new offering is entirely optional and does not replace its existing fare structure. Customers can still choose from the airline’s Value, Classic, and Flex fare categories, all of which include complimentary meals along with additional bundled benefits that increase with the fare level.

According to the airline, the move intends to expand customer choice by introducing a more unbundled travel option for those who prioritize lower ticket prices over onboard meal services.

The Tata Group-owned carrier said the Basic fare is being rolled out on a limited number of domestic routes to gauge passenger interest and demand.

The airline will assess customer feedback and booking trends during the trial period before deciding whether to expand or permanently introduce the fare category across its domestic network.

With operating expenses rising, airlines are increasingly introducing flexible fare structures to attract price-sensitive travelers.

Air India’s experiment reflects a growing trend in the aviation industry towards offering greater fare segmentation and value-based travel options.
