Bihar: India’s ruling National Democratic Alliance recorded a sweeping victory in the Bihar Assembly elections, securing 202 out of 243 seats in results announced on Friday. The outcome reinforces the NDA’s political hold in one of India’s most populous and politically significant states.

The Bharatiya Janata Party delivered a strong performance, winning 89 of the 101 seats it contested and emerging as the single largest party in the state. Its key partner, the Janata Dal (United), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, followed closely with 85 seats.

Smaller allies also contributed to the coalition’s landslide. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) secured 19 seats, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) won 5, and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha added 4 seats.

The Opposition INDIA bloc suffered a major setback, winning just 35 seats across the state. The Rashtriya Janata Dal finished with 25 seats, while the Congress managed only 6. Smaller parties such as AIMIM and the CPI(ML) Liberation secured limited wins.

The elections were held in two phases on November 6 and 11, with Bihar recording one of its highest turnouts in recent years. More than 74 million registered voters participated, with turnout reaching 65 percent in the first phase and nearly 69 percent in the second.

Most exit polls had predicted a clear advantage for the NDA, reflecting strong voter sentiment in favour of the ruling coalition. Following the verdict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Bihar for the decisive mandate, calling it an endorsement of the alliance’s governance and development agenda.
